Background
Adventure Divas, a PBS Television series about courageous, independent-thinking women from countries scattered worldwide.
Challenge
Adventure Divas had a simple, static Web site. It provided basic information to help support the series, but it was neither reflective of the dynamic nature of the television series nor easily capable of handling the fast pace of weekly changes in content required. In addition, a new site was needed to control streaming video playback and help manage the sales of branded products.
The design goal of achieving an engaging Web presentation called for a graphically demanding, data-driven structure cross-linking many different content areas. At the same time there was no budget for extra staff, a Web design expert, who could devote the time traditionally expected to keep the site fresh. The critical factor of quickly and frequently uploading and editing new series stories, images and products, with a minimum of fuss, had to be met.
DataWeb Solution
With the help of resident DataWeb application developers, a general framework for the site was rapidly designed. The production company supplied the graphics to “fill-out” the site’s framework. Working in tandem, the site’s navigation and overall look-and-feel were reviewed and critiqued to final form in a fast, iterative process. In addition, links to video clip outtakes were built and ecommerce was enabled through the source code scripting features embedded in the Dataweb designer. A flexibly structured, content-driven Web site that would have taken months to develop with traditional tools was up in a matter of weeks. It effortlessly allows the production company’s writers and editors to upload and edit content quickly, control the video clips displayed, and select the products to sell within a unified user interface.
Customer Experience:
“I came from an editorial background with only a vague understanding of the technical aspects of running a Web site. Still, I was able to easily transition our static site, including all the multimedia, onto DataWeb's data-driven and content management platform. The site runs so well and looks so good that people on the outside think we have an engineering staff of dozens.”
